He gave a quick glance at the photographs Jane had sent him from Hyde Park. Another victim and another appearance of the mystery man, whether or not it was Sutton. But this time it was different. They’d tried to make it look as though the girl had died of an overdose.

‘The more we find out about this case, the less it makes sense,’ was Jankowski’s laconic comment.

And Eric looked up from his mobile phone. He would try to put all these pieces together later. ‘Do you think this is the primary scene?’

The other detective pointed at the floor of that big room used as a toilet. The people from his team were taking care of the forensics.

DI Lopez from the National Crime Agency, with whom Jankowski had often worked during the investigation on the illicit activities of Aiden Murphy, had contacted him as soon as he’d stumbled on what at once looked like the scene of a murder in a small warehouse in Holloway. The forensic team chief had reached his investigators at the place and then had called Eric straight away.

‘There are low and medium velocity impact spatters and gravitational drops compatible with the beating, high-velocity impact spatters compatible with the shooting. Moreover, there are restraining tools soaked in blood, but also urine, faeces, and other biological residue, again on the floor, which suggest that someone was kept here for a long time, tortured. As soon as we do the DNA match, we’ll know for sure; anyway, this building is connected to Murphy. Even though it’s registered to an old man living in a nursing home, it’s like his name is written all over the place.’ Jankowski chuckled. ‘If it isn’t the primary scene of your case, we’re dealing with a pretty big coincidence and more corpses will pop up soon.’ His irony was veiled by an evident sense of annoyance. Something was bothering him, just like that morning at Scotland Yard.

‘What’s your take on this?’

A crime scene investigator was placing a numbered label. She took a picture, then collected the trace with a cotton swab and, after sealing it, she put it together with all the other evidence.

Jankowski laughed again. ‘I’m in the dark, my friend.’ He started pacing the room, walking around the area where most physical evidence was concentrated. He put his hands on his hips and stopped. He shook his head while staring into space.

‘Go ahead …’

‘Until yesterday I was convinced that Lynch and Doherty had been killed by someone who was looking for Murphy.’

‘What?’ Eric finally put the phone away. He hadn’t expected a remark like that at all.

The other detective sighed and turned his gaze to him. ‘It was them who helped him escape. Murphy had no reason to kill them, much less to think they were involved in his arrest. Indeed, quite the opposite.’ He slowly shook his head, as if weighing what to say next. ‘On the other hand, the two of them had to know where he’d gone and, if someone was looking for him, turning to them was a pretty good starting point.
